"THERE is nothing like a dame," said the old song and when that Dame is the legendary Forces' Sweetheart Vera Lynn and the audience includes hundreds of Service veterans and their wives a great night is assured.

The venue was Lakeside at Frimley Green and the occasion was the annual concert organised by the Camberley branch of the Royal British Legion. Music was by the Central Band of the RAF and although Dame Vera, who has been ill, was unable to sing, her speech was greeted with rapturous applause.

Local Legion President and event organiser, Derek Franklin, told the Star that the concert had been sold out well beforehand. A number of people who queued up hoping for tickets were disappointed.

"Lakeside holds 1050 and this was the biggest and best concert yet," he added. "It went off like a dream."

Mr Franklin presented Lakeside boss Bob Potter with a special Friends of the Poppy Appeal certificate for providing the club free of charge for the past four years.
