Tonnes of tiles spill onto road in lorry mishap

Motorists were left in gridlock when a lorry transporting several tonnes of tiles attempted to turn around a small roundabout

A Lorry sheds a load of tiles at Boxall's Lane roundabout at 3.15pm 02/04/14

Traffic was brought to a standstill in Aldershot when a lorry shed four tonnes of tiles onto the roadway.

The driver of the lorry, which was transporting the tiles to The Tile Source, in Hollybush Lane, attempted to negotiate a mini-roundabout at Boxall's Lane at around 3.30pm, April 2.

The vehicle hit a lamppost, before shedding its load.

Julian Hace, managing director at The Tile Source, said: "We were expecting a delivery of several tonnes of tiles, but we lost at least four tonnes there.

"The driver seems to have gotten confused and tried to get to us in a weird direction. So he ended up trying to get an articulated lorry around a tiny roundabout.

"The lamppost has been hit and that has unbalanced the pallets and everything spilled out."

Surrey Police closed Lower Farnham Road, as the lorry was undriveable. Meanwhile members of staff from The Tile Source came to the scene and cleared the tiles up.

"We had everything off the road in about 40 minutes," Mr Hace said, before adding that the company would be claiming on insurance for the lost tiles.
