AN Aldershot redevelopment scheme, which has turned an eyesore into an eye-catching row of houses, has won a national award.

Raglan Housing Association has received the accolade for its transformation of the former Soldiers' Home in Upper Union Street into 14 homes.

The work won praise from the National Home Improvement Council which awarded the association a certificate of merit.

Don Touhig, Under Secretary of State for Wales, made the presentation at a special ceremony in London.

The scheme involved both adapting and redeveloping the site which consisted mainly of a row of empty and run down shops.

Funded by Rushmoor Council and Raglan, the houses are for rent and shared ownership.

Councillor David Welch, community services cabinet member, said the council was delighted with the development.

"It has enhanced this part of Aldershot," he added.
