Kids raise wheelchair cash
March 21, 2006
YOUNG people have been praised for their caring concern in raising money for a good cause.
Members of the Yateley Pyramid Guild, formerly the youth and junior Red Cross, have been busy with fund-raising ventures over the past year.
The children, aged 5-11, decided to try to buy a wheelchair for the medical loan unit run by the Red Cross at Yateley Medical Centre in Oaklands. There is great demand for borrowing folding chairs by people who are temporarily immobile.
The youngsters collected money from sponsored car washes, selling craft items and greeting cards and running a lucky dip at Yateley May Fair.
They ended up with £400, enough to buy four wheelchairs under the Red Cross bulk purchasing scheme.
Our picture shows the children handing over the chairs at the guild’s annual meeting at the Red Cross Hall in Monteagle Lane.
They were received by Jenny Smart, manager of the Red Cross Hampshire and Isle of Wight medical loan service, and Jacky Cowley and Diana Davis from the Yateley team.
Mrs Smart said: “This is absolutely fantastic. The young people have put in so much effort with the amazing result that they have given us not one but four wheelchairs. It shows the Pyramid Group are really thinking of others.”
Also there from the group were Andrew Sheldon, chairman and one of the leaders, Anna Winter and head youth worker Kim Joslyn.
Mrs Winter said: “We are delighted at the success of this project. It’s quite an achievement for not only a small but also a young group of people, demonstrating what they can do for the community.”
The guild meets on Thursdays at the Red Cross Hall from 6.30 to 7.30pm and provides a variety of activities, including learning about first aid and health and safety.
There is a wide range of courses, including basic child care, community awareness, personal health and hygiene and safety.
