Coalition intact

THE coalition in charge of Hart Council looks set to keep running the authority after the Conservatives suffered another election blow.
For the past year the council has been run by a 18-member coalition comprising Liberal Democrats, Community Campaign Hart and independents.
The Tories lost one of their 16 seats on Thursday night when Christopher Axam of the Community Campaign Hart beat Tory candidate Christopher Butler by 828 votes to 758 in the Courtmoor ward in Fleet.
The seat was previously held by Conservative councillor Wallace Vincent.
The coalition looks likely to continue with an increased majority, but that cannot be confirmed until the newly-formed council holds its first meeting tonight (Thursday).
Coun David Neighbour, who has been leader of the coalition for the past year, said: “These things are never done deals. But I am hopeful and confident that the work that all the councillors in the coalition have done will continue.
“The council will elect a committee of councillors tonight and I have every reason to believe that we can carry on the good work.”
