Security guards at Frimley Park Hospital found a hand grenade in the car park on Saturday.

Police were called at 5.15pm and the area was cordoned off while the bomb squad was scrambled.

The 11 EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) team from Aldershot attended the hospital car park and found a Mills 36 hand grenade.

After being assessed, the grenade was taken away and blown up in a controlled explosion.

The Army said it was quite common for people to find old war munitions and its teams attended calls quite reqularly.

A spokesman said: “The Mills 38 was the standard sort of hand grenade used by the British Army in the Second World War.

“A lot of people brought things like this back as souvenirs after the war.”

Police described the grenade asold and rusty".

A spokesman praised the security staff at the hospital for their vigilance.
