More silverware for the Shots' trophy cabinet
30/ 6/2008
Aldershot Town chairman John McGinty got his hands on yet more silverware in recognition of his team’s promotion to the Football League.
Mr McGinty was presented with the Tom Lloyd Cup by Aldershot Rotary president Mike Tilston at the town’s Princes Hall on Tuesday last week.
The cup, named after a former Rotary president, was given to commemorate the Shots’ outstanding contribution to the community through their victorious campaign in the Blue Square Premier League and winning the Setanta Shield competition last season.
Aldershot Rotary president Mike Tilston said: “The football club’s return to league status has really brought a sense of pride back to Aldershot, which has brought a great buzz back to the town.
“Our thanks go to all concerned with the club, including past captains, past managers and of course the incredibly hard working and loyal supporters’ club. Mr McGinty’s been at the club for some time and has really contributed something outstanding to the town.”
Hundreds of people lined town centre streets on May 3 to enjoy an open-top bus parade for the Shots players.
Mr McGinty said: “It was a total surprise to be given the cup. I’m so pleased with the team’s success and that so many people came to cheer the team on at games and at the parade. The team’s done something really positive for Aldershot.”
The Shots stormed to the Blue Square Premiership title with 101 points, the first time any team had broken the 100-point barrier in that division.
Manager Gary Waddock’s squad scored 82 goals during their 46-match campaign, chalking up 31 wins. They won the Setanta Shield after a dramatic penalty shoot-out at the Recreation Ground against Rushden and Diamonds.
