Cash windfall for firewalker

She did it!
June Warnes, 70, of Maitland Road, Farnborough, conquered her fear and did a firewalk for charity.
June stepped onto hot coals in a bid to collect cash for Hearing Dogs For Deaf People.
She beat her hoped-for £100 target by a mile, raising a splendid £1,116.
June, who spent her career in Customs and Excise in Aldershot and Woking, took part in the firewalk on June 20 at the Hearing Dogs training centre near High Wycombe.
“It went very well, but I was a bit disappointed there were not more people taking part,” she said afterwards.
“We had two hours’ training, where the instructor explained how it worked. He was hyping us up to do the walk.
“By the time it came to do the walk we were apprehensive but not scared,” she said.
“The firewalk felt like walking on coal – quite crumbly, with flames and smoke.
“It was surreal. You just go at your normal walking pace – they advise you not to run, or pose for photos half way,” she said.
“I finished unscathed – my feet were just a bit dirty afterwards.”
June, who keeps Shetland sheepdogs and is known locally as the Sheltie lady, chose the charity because her own mum went deaf in later life and June therefore has experience of the problems that deafness can bring.
When one of her Shelties had a litter, June contacted Hearing Dogs – and over the years she has donated five pups to the organisation.
One dog, Jinty, was named Heroic Hearing Dog of the Year 2007 for saving the life of a neighbour of her owner.
