Councillor's concern at 'incredible' weeds

7/ 8/2008

Rushmoor is in danger of winning a 'weeds in bloom' award, a councillor has claimed.

Coun Mike Roberts, Labour community affairs spokesman, said some parts of the borough have weeds growing several feet high.

He said: “It’s all very well having Rushmoor in Bloom, in which we do exceptionally well, but I must admit, the weeds this year are incredible.

“Wherever you go there are prime examples of all manner of species of weed growing over bushes, in drains, in roads and on pavements.

“Good examples can be found at Upper Elms Road, The Grove, outside the old post office in Victoria Road and Campbell Close.

“I have been around a long time and I have never seen anything like it.

“People are getting very frustrated and wondering when anyone is going to do anything about it.”

Weed spraying was taken over by Hampshire County Council in 2001.

A Hampshire County Council spokeswoman said: “We have contractors in Aldershot and Farnborough who are weed spraying at the moment but the weeds can take up to 10 days to die off due to the mild composition of the pesticides used.”
