Shots to stage a day opposing racism

21/10/2008

Aldershot Town Football Club is taking part in a national week of events aimed at promoting diversity.

Its decision comes after a fan allegedly chanted racist remarks at a Bury player during the club’s home game on Saturday October 4.

The club will hold a day of action at the EBB Stadium at the Recreation Ground, Aldershot, for the game against Port Vale on Tuesday October 28, as part of the One Game, One Community campaign.

The annual event is organised by the group Let’s Kick It Out, which aims to expel racism from football. It is one of 1,000 events taking place across the country.

Events include a week-long activities programme starting on October 27 and match-day activities that will happen before the Port Vale match and at half-time.

Club chairman John McGinty said: “As a club we are delighted to actively promote the programme, not only during the week but throughout the season. We take our involvement with our community very seriously and are anti-discriminatory in all areas of its work.”

Striker John Grant said: “As a team at Aldershot Town, we are united in all ways, as I’m sure is the case with professionals up and down the country. All that matters to us is the colour of the shirt that we wear.”
