Mountain challenge
31/10/2008
Can you see yourself joining this group on a once-in-a-lifetime trek through the most spectacular mountains in the world?
After the success of a previous trip through the peaks of the Himalayas, the Cove based Parity for Disability is organising another breathtaking journey to raise money for its vital work.
The charity works with young people with multiple disabilities at its day care centres in Farnborough and Camberley, but needs to raise more than £2 million to build a new purpose-built centre in Cherrywood Road, Farnborough.
Very few of us will ever be able to organise our own trips to the remote areas of Nepal, but the charity is looking to recruit willing fundraisers for a stunning and challenging walk next year.
It will have an information stand on Saturday November 8 at Hart Leisure Centre in Fleet, from 9.30am-noon in an effort to recruit some adventurous minded souls.
Representatives will be on hand to answer questions about training, fundraising and the amazing journey involved.
Parity is running two Himalayan Challenges to Nepal in the autumn of next year, with participants able to choose between a six-day or a more challenging 12-day trek.
The Annapurna base camp trek, which takes participants to the stunning Anna-purna Sanctuary, a beautiful natural amphitheatre of mountains, will take place between October 23 and November 8 next year.
The shorter Bhara Pokhari Challenge, which offers magnificent views of the Himalayas and the chance to add a flight to Everest at the end, takes place between October 23 and November 1 2009.
Alison Cooper, executive director of Parity, went on the trek in 2005.
She described the trip as “the most incredible experience”.
“It is a complete culture shock,” Miss Cooper said. “We travelled as far as the road would take us and then carried up the mountain on foot. We walked around one corner and looked up to see what we thought was clouds, but which turned out to be mountains covered in snow.
“The feeling that you were completely away from civilisation was an amazing experience.”
