Tributes to popular crash victim

6/11/2008

Tributes have been paid on a social networking website to a 20-year-old Yateley man following his death in a fatal car accident in Minley on Saturday.

Ross Scallan, of The Sett, was driving southbound on the A327 Minley Road, when he lost control of his black Fiat Punto on a left-hand bend at about 3.30am.

Mr Scallan’s car left the road and collided with a tree. Police closed Minley Road for five hours as they carried out an investigation.

Flowers a few hundred yards from where the accident occurred are on display as tribute to the young man’s life.

Over 50 messages were displayed on his Facebook wall. Rachel Gawler wrote: “We are truly devastated by the loss and will all miss you very much.

“Thoughts go out to your family and all your friends.

“Right now I am comforted by the image and sound of your laugh, so distinctive! Wishing you peace now, see you on the other side.”

Sarah Lowther wrote: “Absolutely shocked, why do people keep getting taken away from us at such a young age, say hi to my brother for me Ross, I’m sure the two of you will get along! Thinking of you and all your family, take care.”

Richard Hardy wrote: “You were the best kid Ross, when I coached you for hockey you were one of the best kids to have on your team, R.I.P my friend.”

Hana Laurie wrote: “Dude, I was talking about you on Friday as well. That’s weird. Hard to believe you’re not around anymore.”

Stephanie Jordan wrote: “Will miss you so much Ross, always knew how to make me smile.

“Love you sweetie. Won’t have a drink together for my 18th, but I’ll have one for you.

“You are the joker of the pack, can’t believe those sad words we all heard last night, kick arse upstairs sweet love.”

Stefan Hogarth said: “We’ll all remember you, in the locker room, joking around, one of the boys. And you’ll be in my thoughts as I play today. Rest in peace buddy.”

Mr Scallan’s death was not an isolated incident, according to the licensee of the Crown and Cushion pub in Minley Road, Julie McNally. She is concerned that other lives are also in jeopardy.

The landlord of the pub, just a few hundred yards away from the bend in the road where the 20-year-old’s life was cut short, said the road is an accident hotspot.

“This road continuously has car accidents,” she said. People trying to get out of our car park here have problems.

“There are always cars bumping each other and near misses.

“We have been onto the council for mirrors so people can see traffic heading toward them. They come off the M3 at such speed. It’s a 50mph road here and it’s frightening.

“When you come out of the car park you have to edge your way out because of the blind spots.

“We have been in contact with Hampshire highways for two years and inquired at least three times and have got nowhere.

“There is always something happening along this road.

“Sometimes it happens twice a day because of the speed cars come up and down the road.”

Ms McNally first heard of the accident when a friend attempted to visit the pub on Saturday morning and could not get to it as police had blocked the road.

Cllr Mel Kendal, executive member for environment at Hampshire County Council, said: “This was a tragic accident and our deepest sympathies go out to the young man’s family.

“We try very hard to make our roads as safe as possible and take positive action to address any trouble spots.

“Until police have concluded their investigations, however, we are unable to comment specifically on this particular case.

“The Casualty Reduction Partnership will be considering the police findings of course, as part of the ongoing assessment of all locations where serious accidents have occurred.”

Police have put signs at either end of the spot where Mr Scallan died, appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Farnborough Roads Policing Unit Sergeant Spencer Wragg said: “I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or who saw the Punto being driven on the A327 prior to the collision to contact Operation Gulf at Farnborough Roads Policing Unit.”

Anyone with information should ring Operation Gulf on 0845 045 45 45 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity line on 0800 555 111.
