Children talk to speeding motorists
21/11/2008
Motorists speeding near a Farnborough primary school on Wednesday were caught by police with help from pupils.
Two police officers stood with Year 5 pupils outside Cherrywood Community Primary School and caught 15 drivers in two one-hour sessions.
After police spoke to the drivers, the children had words with them as well.
They asked questions about their journeys before giving them a letter on the dangers of speeding.
Headteacher Barbara Goodchild said the children learned a lot: “The children loved it. They loved seeing the police working and being able to speak to members of the public.
“They loved learning a lot about speeding and they learned all the relevant penalties.”
She also hoped the evidence gathered would raise awareness and help find someone to act as a lollipop person to help children cross Prospect Road, where the drivers were caught.
“We have a couple of children who have narrowly avoided being run over,” she said.
“We’re hoping to get a lollipop person for the road.
“Hampshire County Council are up for it but it’s about finding someone who’s up for it as well and can spare the time.”
Prospect Road has no speed bumps, unlike adjoining Mayfield Road where the school’s main entrance is.
The two Speedwatch sessions took place from 8.45-9.45am and 2.30-3.30pm.
Fourteen of the 15 speeding drivers were doing less than 40mph in the 30mph zone, and received warnings.
But the other one, who was travelling faster, was fined and had penalty points put on their driving licence.
