A group aimed at supporting victims of domestic abuse was launched at Park Children’s Centre in Aldershot on Monday.

Representatives from Taking Steps handed out information to residents and professionals about the new group set up to offer long term support to men and women who have experienced domestic abuse.

The open morning coincided with White Ribbon Day on Tuesday for which people across the world are invited to take a stand against domestic abuse.

Group sessions taking place at the centre every Monday between 10am and 11.45am will offer people the chance to explore aspects of domestic violence such as personal safety issues or the effect it has on children. They will be led by Gerrie Jordan, advanced group facilitator at Taking Steps. Free creche facilities will be available to members.

Guest speakers including solicitors will feature and other types of abuse such as financial, emotional and sexual abuse will be explored.

Karen Evans, chairman of the North East Hampshire domestic violence forum, said Taking Steps looks to help victims develop their self esteem by taking more time to look at themselves and their problems as well as cope with stress and rebuild trust and respect.

She said: “The group is a chance for people who have suffered domestic abuse or violence at any point in their life and get support from others who are or have been in the same situation.

“As the facilitator, Gerrie will help members see the positive aspects in themselves to start to build their confidence up again.

“She will help them to try to find ways to move forward.

“Perhaps that might be by starting a journal or a book of happy memories so if they are having a bad time it will cheer them up.

“These can be quite helpful and in turn be shared with others in the group.”
