Virus outbreak at Frimley Park

Scores of beds at Frimley Park Hospital have been abandoned after an outbreak of a contagious virus.

Hospital staff have taken 37 beds out of use after four patients came down with norovirus - the winter vomiting bug.

Patients have been isolated in a bid to contain the outbreak.

Although the virus is not considered dangerous for most people, it can be potentially lethal for vulnerable patients.

Frimley Park is asking people who think they may have the virus not to visit the hospital until at least two full days after symptoms have passed.

Symptoms of norovirus usually start between 24 and 48 hours after initial infection. They include the sudden onset of nausea followed by vomiting and diarrhoea.

Some people affected may also experience mild fever, headaches, stomach cramps or aching limbs.

Mary Dunne, director of nursing, said: “People with any of these symptoms are asked to refrain from visiting relatives or friends at Frimley Park.

“Young children can often be carriers of norovirus without showing symptoms so we would ask parents where possible not to bring their children in unless absolutely necessary.”

She added that hand washing or use of antiseptic gels were the best way of preventing the spread of infections.

Anyone with an appointment at the hospital who thinks they my have the bug should call for advice on 01276 526440 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
