Investigation dropped into 'leaked secrets'

February 25, 2009

An investigation into two Hampshire police officers who were questioned by London police over alleged leaks of sensitive material has been dropped.

The inquiry concerning the alleged leak - in contravention of the Official Secrets Act - was being led by London’s Metropolitan Police force.

The Met dropped the case because the Crown Prosecution Service told them that there was insufficient evidence to warrant a trial and that there was no realistic prospect that either officer would be convicted.

The officers, who have not been named by the investigators, were questioned at a south London police station in September.

One of the officers was arrested and bailed in connection with the alleged leaks.

The second officer, who was interviewed under caution, was not arrested.

A statement from the Met said: “We can confirm that following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service on February 20 2009, there is insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction and no further action will be taken against an off-duty police officer who was interviewed under caution by the MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) on September 8 2008.

“We can (also) confirm that following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service on February 20 2009, that there is insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction and no further action will be taken against an off-duty police officer who was interviewed under caution by the MPS on September 9 2008.”
