A group of mayors went back to college during a visit to Farnborough on Wednesday last week.

More than 35 mayors and civic dignitaries from Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and the Surrey borders took part in the event, which was part of Rushmoor Civic Day.

The area hosting the event changes annually, and this year it was the turn of Farnborough to welcome the special visitors.

The mayors, some decked out in full mayoral dress, visited various sites in the town, including Farnborough College of Technology, the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST) Museum and TAG Farnborough Airport.

At Farnborough College of Technology, the mayors were treated to a range of activities put on by the students.

Christine Davis, principal of Farnborough College of Technology, said: “I am thrilled that so many visitors from other boroughs were able to attend the event.
“It has been a wonderful opportunity for our students and staff to share with visitors the fantastic work that our students achieve here at the college.”

The activities were designed to reflect different aspects of the college’s curriculum.

The School of Applied and Health Sciences gave a “Let’s get physical” session for those energetic enough to take part, such as Southampton Mayoress Mary Parnell, who took part in a rowing challenge.

Those preferring more of a mental workout were catered for by the School of Media and Creative Arts, which organised a “Know it all” quiz.

This involved different mayors competing against one another to answer general knowledge questions, while the students filmed and compered the action.

There was also an opportunity to try out the construction department’s equipment and use it to bend copper pipes.

Those not in the mood for competition or anything strenuous and favouring a more relaxing day enjoyed being worked over by the hair and beauty students.

Enid Crouch, the Mayoress of Fareham, was one of those able to sit back and enjoy a manicure.

The mayors also had the chance to visit the college’s TV studio, giving Andrew Lloyd, chief executive of Rushmoor Borough Council, the chance to try out some of the cameras.
