Driven to help Army heroes
April 23, 2009
A kind-hearted female cabbie has been busy raising money for the Armed Forces charity Help For Heroes.
Fleet-based taxi driver Sue Bishop raised £250, helped by soldiers from Gibraltar Barracks in Minley.
The soldiers stood outside Fleet Railway Station armed with collection buckets, while Sue also had a collection box on the dashboard of her taxi.
“The response was absolutely brilliant. Everybody was just so generous and I was really chuffed,” said Sue, 49, of Cricket Hill, Yateley.
“When I told the man at the newsagents in The Parade at Yateley about what I was doing he gave me lots of very expensive red, white and blue helium balloons for free so I could publicise what I was doing.”
Sue had little hesitation in choosing the Armed Forces charity.
“The bulk of my customers come from the barracks and I’m very fond of those guys,” she said.
“I saw a feature in The Sun about Help for Heroes and when I saw pictures of soldiers in their 20s who had lost their limbs I was heartbroken.
“It really brought it home to me because these guys could have easily been in my cab.”
