Bravery award for Farnborough pensioner

By Jack Sommers
July 10, 2009

A PENSIONER who was stabbed twice while fighting off a robber has said he is not a hero.

Michael Seery, 69, who is blind in one eye, fought for two minutes with Metin Mustafa, who had tried to hold up the Coral betting shop in Fernhill Road, Farnborough in February 2007.

On July 8 he was given a gold medal at the National Police Bravery Awards in Manchester.

“I don’t want to be too jingoistic about it. I did what anyone would have done,” Mr Seery said.

He attacked the man with a chair and was stabbed in the groin and the side before he overpowered 34-year-old Mustafa, who was wielding a knife and wearing a crash helmet.

Mr Seery was the only customer in the shop when Mustafa entered, who is now serving a nine-year prison sentence for the attack.

He was waiting for friends to come to their regular card game in the shop when Mustafa, of Woodland Walk, Aldershot entered.

Within seconds, Mr Seery was grappling with him and after about 30 seconds Mustafa was running away.

Though he escaped, staff recognised him after his helmet came partly off and he was arrested the same day.
