Loonies open Lanzarote branch
By Stephen LloydSeptember 23, 2009
THE Monster Raving Loony Party has opened a new branch in Lanzarote ahead of its annual conference in Hook.
Party leader Alan “Howling Laud” Hope from Fleet was invited to officially open the new HQ at the Bulldog Bar in Costa Teguise by a long-lost party member who disappeared to the Canary Islands 15 years ago.
Dick Knowles, whose party name is RiDICKulous Knowles, founded the British FM music station in Lanzarote and is an old friend of Mr Hope’s and the party’s original leader Screaming Lord Sutch.
Mr Hope was met at Arrecife Airport by an entourage of suitably dressed Loonies and even some of the airport staff joined in the welcome.
“During the visit it was proposed that the Loony Party should kick-start the Lanzarote economy and put everybody back into work by exporting cans of sunshine back to Britain because they have too much of it,” said Mr Hope.
“It will be marketed as Canned Heat, which brought tremendous rounds of applause.”
Mr Hope is now back home in Fleet preparing for the party’s annual conference in Hook this weekend.
“The conference is being held at The Raven Hotel in Station Road,” he said.
“It’s the same venue as last year and was such a success that the management has invited us back.”
Delegates and candidates started arriving yesterday (Thursday) ready for the main public days today (Friday) and tomorrow.
Tonight sees music from Jon Con Jovy and Frendz, along with Elvis aka Dale Fontaine, while What’s Next featuring Brainchild and The Big Fibbers take to the stage tomorrow night.
“Everyone is welcome,” said Mr Hope.
“Wear a silly hat or fancy dress if you wish, but most of all bring your sense of humour.”
