Another supermarket planned for Aldershot

By Nicola Hudson
November 06, 2009

THE company behind an Aldershot shopping centre is planning to build a 90,000 sq ft supermarket to revive the town.

Threadneedle, which owns The Galleries, believes securing a major supermarket name would attract big brand stores to the town centre and provide a much-needed economic boost to Aldershot’s remaining traders.

Last week it submitted a planning application to Rushmoor Borough Council and is now in talks with several supermarket retailers.

If successful, it could be the sixth supermarket in Aldershot.

There is already a Tesco, Co-op, Iceland and Lidl and this week the council confirmed Morrisons has been proposed for the new Westgate development.

In recent weeks Threadneedle and London & Cambridge, which owns Wellington Shopping Centre, have been discussing with town centre retailers their concerns about the impact incorporating a supermarket into the Westgate development could have on traders.

Constructed on the edge of Aldershot, Morrisons would sit along Wellington Avenue, which bypasses the town centre.

Traders fear the public would visit the edge of town to do their shopping and then leave, without spending their money in any other shops.

Threadneedle believes that if a large supermarket were to be created in the heart of Aldershot, it would create an opportunity for retailers to attract customers into their shops.

Marcus Ralling, director of Threadneedle, said: “Building a supermarket in Westgate will make the town weaker. A supermarket is there to attract people to shop. It would do that but on the edge of town.”

He added: “We are not opposed to the leisure development at the Westgate site but feel a supermarket is a short-term solution that will have a detrimental effect on the Aldershot town centre.”

The original plan for Westgate proposed building 420 homes, but following the collapse of the economy and housing market, property developer Linden Homes withdrew from the scheme.

Forced to consider alternative uses for that part of the development, the council came to the conclusion that food retail represented the best way forward.

Edward Mileham, director at London & Cambridge, disagrees.

He said out-of-town retailing would decimate Aldershot and revealed that his company, together with Threadneedle, will run a campaign objecting to a supermarket being built as part of Westgate.

“The best place for a new supermarket is in the historic town centre where it can draw shoppers back and persuade new retailers to move in,” he said.

The council’s chief executive, Andrew Lloyd, is aware of Threadneedle and London & Cambridge’s opposition to the proposed Westgate supermarket but said it was wrong to stop the project because of their objections.

He said: “We believe it’s best to see the project through a planning process, which will include a retail impact study, capacity study and it will look at the very question – is this store right for the site?

“The public and businesses will be consulted and that’s where issues of concern can be expressed.”

Mr Lloyd said the council has supported Threadneedle’s efforts to bring a food store into The Galleries but no supermarket was interested.

Last Tuesday evening the council’s cabinet approved setting up Westgate Aldershot Limited, a joint venture company that will take the scheme forward.

In January the council will submit a planning application for the development, which will include Morrisons, a seven-screen cinema, eight restaurants and a 700-space car park.

Mr Lloyd said it is the final chance to deliver Westgate. If any part of the proposal fails there are no alternative options.

Aldershot has become run down and empty . The heart has gone. Once a thriving little town with lots of character, nice shops and it even bore the name the 'Home of the British Army'. Even that's been taken away. I brought my children up here, the best years, but now thats gone. Full of fast food places, houses going up everywhere taking up all the green spaces and even the Pubs are gradually closing... the end of an era. Saxona

Seems strange that they are allowing a Morrisons to open outside the town centre. I applied to open an baby accessories and nursery products in one of the warehouses in North Lane. They turned me down because they wanted the business to remain in the town centre.

Or would it be that Morrisons would put more money into Rushmoor coffers that I would be able to?

Talk about one rule for them

Reply to Outermongolian, you need to start somewhere with Regeneration of our Town. Westgate would be a good Start. The more our Town has to offer, the better chance of investment to our Town. We all know we need more than one egg in the basket. Like tackling some of the town other problems, and creating the right environment to attract new investment. Which David Phillips, the Town Centre manager is starting to do.

Many of the other Towns in the Area are having problems getting new Retail businesses to there development's. So i think we are Lucky we still have the opportunity to have Westgate delivered to us and our Town.

It isn't just west gate taken the shoppers out of Aldershot - its the way that rushnmoor borough council has built the town up in the first place - if you read from the following page about Shopping in Aldershot it might tell you what I am getting at, Aldershot town has been a shell of empty shops for quite a while:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldershot#Shopping_in_Aldershot. also if you read this web site also:- http://home.clara.net/heureka/surrey-hants/ald-shot.htm.

It states on the second web site that Aldershot Town centre has been going down hill for over 40 years - long recession isn't it rushmoor borough council?

Like I say Histoy tells it all doesn't it?

As for what Outermongolian said:- Excuse me for msiing something ! Int it written above that there is a Lidl ? Then where is it ? Have i mist it ? I know i dont shop at spec savers but ive never seen a Lidl !

No you haven't missed it - it just hasn't been built yet and apparently is opening in the new year? what year is that we might ask?

Thanks for reply Kip, yes they do have some great offers. I shopped at several stores, the good thing is they dont try to be the whole High St in one Store. The Southwood Store is a good example. As is the store in Gosport.

Reply to Stephen Dawson, I fully agree with you but feel I should point out that Morrisons do sell electrical goods, mobile phones, cameras, sat.nav. and household goods such as vacuum cleaners and inkjet printers (at really good prices) Dont miss out-grab a bargain!

I think Morrison's is a good choice for Westgate, as it seems to be very community minded compared to most other supermarkets. And will complement what the town already has. Plus our town gets the leisure side of Westgate. Which Citygrove & Rushmoor Borough Council has tenant's for the Scheme, including a Multiplex Cinema, Restaurants, Hotel & Parking.

The design of Westgates scheme, means the pedestrian flow is directed into the town through Upper Union St into Union St. So the connection to the town are good.

I think a quality scheme like Westgate will bring new businesses to our town, Morrison's as a Supermarket doesn't try to be a shop of all shops i.e clothing, electrical goods, mobile phones, household good etc, unlike most other big Supermarkets.
