Big rise in near-misses at level crossing

MORE people are risking their lives at Farnborough North station level crossing to shave a few minutes off their journey.

Figures from Network Rail, the company that maintains railway lines throughout the UK, has said the number of people acting dangerously at the crossing has risen dramatically in the last year.

It said that this year the number of incidents being reported at the crossing had trebled compared to 2008.

As a result, Farnborough is now being targeted by Network Rail as part of a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of level crossings.

Ellie Reilly, community safety manager at Network Rail, said: “Level crossings are safe, but if misused, they all pose very real risks.”

In October alone, Network Rail received five reports of near misses at Farnborough North. In one instance, a spokesman said that a person narrowly avoided being hit by a train as he darted across the tracks. Network Rail also said that it had had problems with students from nearby colleges using the level crossing as a short cut.

If there's a green light then it is safe to cross, if its red it means you have to wait for a little while. If you have a car or wheelchair then you can check with the signalman by using the phone provided. Everything is clearly marked out so whats so difficult about that?

Darwinism and 'survival of the fittest' at its very best. Such a selfish and stupid act - it is the train drivers you have to feel sorry for (and in the event of an incident, the families and people who have to clean up the mess).
