Aldershot 'may lose 2012 Olympics camp'

November 24, 2009

BRITAIN’S Olympic team may not come to Aldershot before the 2012 Games because so many of the top sports do not want to go there, it has been reported.

Aldershot beat bids from Loughborough University, Bath University and Millfield School in Somerset to host the sportsmen and women as they carried out their training and preparations in the months before the London Olympics.

But the swimming and cycling arms of Team GB have already opted for alternative arrangements, and the British Olympic Association (BOA) is now consulting on its decision to use Aldershot as a base.

BOA chief executive Andy Hunt told reporters the association had not signed any contract to go to Aldershot.

He added it would come to a decision early next year.

Well TEam Rushmoor Should be very proud of themselves Not only has Aldershot lost so many shops over the 8 years that I have lived here and so many Army regiments it only really follows that they should lose Team GB. They have known for so longh they were coming but made NO effort to make Aldershot more appealing when people ask me where I live I always say Hampshire, never Aldershot as Im to ashamed of this town. But I do see the Bulldoers have moved in on the old health centre so who knows in another 8 years we may have a decent shopping centre. JUst out of curiosity how many of Team Rushmoor Live in Aldershot?? not that many I bet, it says it all,

sounds about right, perhaps they've gone to farnborough where team rushmoor deems it more appropriate to invest it's funds for development. who would want to come to aldershot's decaying, run down & dated centre, even the locals shun ithe mish-mash of foreign dialects & seedy looking stores where one gets the feeling that store owners eye them with suspicion (maybe as a potential shoplifter rather than a customer). anyway, well done team rushmoor for giving me a chance to give a little sarcastic giggle every time i drive past the 'aldershot centre redevelopment' sign by tescos (it's been there years but still not a sign of redevolpment) - pathetic!! still! i've got to go xmas shopping now (a pity i need to drive over 10 miles to a decent shopping centre to do it - sigh!!) give yourselves a pat on the back rushmoor councillors.

No great loss really given that they were only coming for a few weeks in order to collect their blazers and such stuff. Their training would have been done elsewhere more suitable.

   Nothing supprises me!

Aldershot hasn't had much investment over the years - how on earth did they get the BRITAIN’S Olympic team here in the first place.

The only place that they can train is on army land any way.

Its a shame for all those who put in so much work to get it here in the first plaqce but they must of been joking to of thought that we were the best place in the first place.

Obviously the athletes are all snobs and forgotton where they came from and the type of places they woulda went to when coming through the ranks. Still dont know why we have olympics, country needs the world cup more, would save money aswell since we already have the stadiums, and have 1 of the best records in europe for well behaved fans. That said, PJT completely right, Aldershot needs heaps of investment!

A great shame for the town. I can't vouch for the sporting facilities suppose it's not necessarlily the place that, aesthetically, the athletes might put at the top of their list of the nicest places to spend some time. The town is badly in need of investment.
