Plans to cut gas supply despite cold weather
By Tim TonkinJanuary 14, 2010
A YATELEY resident who faced having her gas supply cut off due to routine works has spoken of her relief that work is to be postponed.
Sue Perkins from Lawford Crescent, was left astounded and horrified last week when workmen from energy supplier Southern Gas turned up in her road explaining they had to carry out replacement work on the street’s gas mains.
Despite the sub-zero temperatures, they said that this would mean the gas supply in her road would need to be shut off during the day and insisted that they had previously written to confirm that work was due take place.
Mrs Perkins also discovered that access to her driveway would be restricted by excavation work necessary for the gas mains to be replaced.
With no guarantee that gas could be reconnected by evening, and with an apparent lack of contingency plans in the form of portable heaters, Mrs Perkins contacted local authorities alerting them to the situation.
She said: “The most crazy thing of all is that the site manager told me they were pushed for time to get all the gas mains replaced. They have to complete the work by the year 2030.
“Delaying by a week or two because of the coldest winter for 30 years in the UK is really not going to make that much of a ‘dent’ in their 20 year schedule”.
