Businessman fined for hair salon rubbish dumping

May 11, 2010

A BUSINESSMAN from Yateley who dumped piles of commercial rubbish behind his hair salon in Bracknell has been fined.

Alan Farmery, of Mill Lane, was prosecuted at Maidenhead Magistrates' Court on April 16 for expecting Bracknell Forest taxpayers to pick up his mess.

The owner of Hollywood Nails and Headlines hair salon in the Crossway pleaded guilty and was fined a total of £240.

He will pay £75 for making a waste duty of care offence, £150 for the council's costs and a victim surcharge of £15.

He was discovered to have dumped piles of rubbish behind his hair salon in Bracknell town centre on November 3, 2009.

The court heard how a fixed penalty notice for the offence was issued when the rubbish was first found, but it was not paid and prosecution proceedings started.

David Steeds, head of environmental health at Bracknell Forest council, said: "It's completely irresponsible for businesses and individuals to expect the council to pick up waste they cannot be bothered to deal with legally.

“Dumped waste not only makes the place look unsightly, it unnecessarily increases people's fear of crime and costs the taxpayer extra cash in clean-up fees.

"Mr Farmery could have resolved this situation by paying a fixed penalty notice for the dumped waste but I'm pleased he pleaded guilty in court and that he was fined.

“This case shows Bracknell Forest Council is prepared to prosecute those who flout the law and threaten our environment."
