Man lifts weights for charity

A BLACKWATER man has been putting his back into fund raising efforts for the developing world by putting a hobby to practical use.
Weightlifter Ron Benning managed to raise £640 for women’s charity “SafeHands for Mothers” by completing 1,500 weight-lifting reps in under three hours.
Mr Benning, who had challenged family, friends and colleagues to sponsor him in his challenge, easily broke his target of 1,000 reps of 10 to 17.5kg weights in four hours.
The money will go towards supporting expectant mothers in Ethiopia during pregnancy and other related illnesses.
Speaking about his challenge Mr Benning explained that he had felt compelled to do something after watching a video produced by the charity.
He said: “I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and when I saw a film made by SafeHands about women in outlying villages in Ethiopia and the plight of these women, it just touched my heart.
“What better way to help these people than by using your hobby as a means of achieving this.”
