School's Kenyan links are growing stronger
June 08, 2010
A SCHOOL in Yateley has continued to show its support for Kenya after nearly two decades of fundraising.
Yateley School has held links with the Marafa district in the African country for the past 19 years and has helped to raise substantial sums of money to support education in the community there.
The most recent fundraiser involved the school’s head of business studies, Sarah Miller, wearing a lion outfit – much to the amusement of the pupils who had sponsored her.
Links to the Kenyan schools were initially on a penpal basis but this has since developed into groups of students from Yateley’s sixth form visiting Africa.
So far, a total of 46 pupils have gone to Marafa primary schools during trips to Kenya.
Mrs Miller said: “The impact of visiting Kenya has left many students speechless.
"The cultural value to students and to the African children is very significant.”
