Sainsbury's staff show they have heart
By Jack SommersJune 21, 2010
STAFF at a Farnborough supermarket joined forces with doctors and nurses from Frimley Park Hospital to tell shoppers about their fundraising pledge.
The new Sainsbury’s store took part in a day of fundraising activities last Friday (11 June).
It was one of the first big events in a campaign by staff to raise an amazing £25,000 towards the hospital’s Heart 2 Heart Appeal to equip a new heart attack centre.
The event saw store staff dressed as nurses, doctors and patients working alongside Frimley Park staff in real hospital uniforms to raise money for the Heart 2 Heart Appeal.
Rushmoor’s mayor Cllr Brian Parker and his mayoress wife Brenda were guests of honour.
They arrive in time to see dry stores manager Ben Munden go through the pain barrier to raise a further £300 in sponsorship by having his chest waxed in front of cheering colleagues and shoppers.
Paul Howard, store manager, said: “We’re aiming to raise £25,000 toward this important appeal. No Sainsbury’s store has raised that amount, so it is a stretching and ambitious target but we’re making a fabulous start.”
By the end of the day, the store had raised more than £2,000.
Frimley consultant cardiologist Dr Peter Clarkson was very impressed with effort staff had made.
He said: “I haven’t seen anything like this – the amount of time and energy you have all put in is absolutely fantastic.”
The Heart 2 Heart Appeal is aiming to raise up to £1.5million to equip a new heart attack centre at Frimley to give its heart attack patients the better emergency treatment.
Among the attractions at Sainsbury’s were children’s balloons, face-painting raffles, video games, healthy eating information and bag packing with Radio Frimley Park’s outside broadcast providing music and further entertainment.
Cheryl D’Cruz, the hospital’s assistant fundraising manager, said: “We’re so pleased that Sainsbury’s in Farnborough have chosen to support the Heart 2 Heart Appeal.
“The team at the store are brilliant and they’ve really thrown themselves wholeheartedly into the fundraising.
“The atmosphere at the store was amazing and I know all the Frimley Park staff who took part were really impressed and loved joining in the fun.
“With the kind of community support we’ve seen from Sainsbury’s and their customers I’m sure we can reach our goal of raising enough money to equip the new heart attack centre.”
