Day centre appeals for community support

A LONG-STANDING day centre in Yateley is appealing for people in the community to come forward to help keep their organisation’s vital work going.
The Frogmore day care centre on Potley Hill Road, is calling for more local people to step forward to help out staff with day-to-day activities on a voluntary basis.
The centre, which has been caring for elderly people in and outside of Yateley for over 20 years, says that it is making the appeal in its attempt to deal with financial pressures brought on by the tough economic climate.
Day centre chairman, Roderick Crane, said that the appeal for voluntary staff was the first of its kind, but that the need to maintain the service was vital.

He said: “As a charity we are feeling the difficult financial climate as many organisations are. I am appealing for volunteers workers to help in general any free time would be welcome.”
The centre, which is based at Frogmore Leisure Centre and is funded by social services, runs five days a week providing a range of services for local elderly people including physiotherapy, social events and hot meals.
Because of financial constraints however staff at the centre have recently seen their hours of work reduced in order to cut running costs.
The move has caused concern that the level of service provided to centre users could be affected as a result.
Without volunteers Mr Crane explained that the centre might have to look to alternatives such as hiring agency staff to fill in the gaps.
Community
He added however that hired staff would cost the centre more money, and that volunteers from the local community could do just as much as an untrained agency worker.
He said: “It would be wonderful if we could get the community more involved in voluntary work at the centre.
“Day to day work would range from making tea to helping people to the toilet or acting as an assistant on one of our minibuses.”
