Yateley women in race to fight cancer

A GROUP of Yateley women  have come together to help raise nearly £1,500 for cancer research at this year’s Race for Life.

A team of florists from the town’s “Village Florist” store on Reading Road took to the streets of Basingstoke with around 4,000 other women last Sunday, as part of the annual cancer research fundraiser.

Store manager Samantha Dowden ran with her mother, Liz Lee, and daughter Emily during the race.

They were joined by Samantha’s florist colleagues Bethany Foxwell-Smith and Julie Scholes and her daughter Sophie, as well as Frances, Sally and Rachel Tickell.

Proud

In doing so the team were able to raise £1,400 for Cancer Research UK, although this figure could increase as more donations come in.

Speaking about the event Florist manager Mrs Dowden said the team had all greatly enjoyed the day and were all proud to have contributed to the fight against cancer, claiming that she had initially been inspired to enter the race following a discussion with her daughter Emily.

She said: “Emily had come home from school telling me that her PE teacher had been encouraging pupils to get involved in the race for life.

“I’d heard about the race before but it wasn’t until Emily mentioned it that I suddenly decided that I wanted to actually take part.”

Success

Eventually a group of nine women was formed with an age range spanning from 66 to seven-years-old, and despite having little time to physically prepare for the run, all team members successfully completed the course.

One team member, Bethany Foxwell-Smith, completed the course in 34 minutes while the team’s youngest member aged seven finished the course in an impressive 41 minutes.

All the money raised by the team will go to cancer research UK. To contribute to the team’s efforts go to: www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/bethanyfoxwellsmith
