Soldiering through golf marathon for Help for Heroes
By Pete CastleJuly 05, 2010
THE memory of fallen comrades will help to spur on three soldiers as they prepare for a four-day golf marathon to raise money for an armed forces charity.
Corporal James Rochester, Corporal Mohan Thapa and Captain Michael Thomas will attempt the 216-hole ‘golfathon’ this week.
The soldiers - all of the Corps of Royal Engineers who are based at Gibraltar Barracks in Minley, between Farnborough and Yateley - will play twelve rounds of golf between Tuesday and Friday (July 6 to 9) at four different golf clubs.
The trio will be playing three 18-hole rounds of golf each day, for four consecutive days, at Sherfield Oaks near Basingstoke, Pine Ridge in Frimley, Blue Mountain in Bracknell and at Oak Park near Farnham.
In true military fashion, all tee times are already booked and all the arrangements for the days have been finalised in advance.
Cpl Rochester explained: “We hope to raise in the region of £3,500 for Help for Heroes. We already have £600 pledged by supporters and £400 worth of prizes kindly donated for the raffle we are organising.
“We are looking forward to our golfathon, although we are aware that it will be an exhausting few days.”
He added: “We all have friends who have been injured or killed in combat, and our thoughts of them will spur us on to complete the task.”
