Smoke detector saves three in house fire

By Tim Tonkin
July 08, 2010

THREE people in Yateley had a lucky escape after being woken by smoke alarms during a conservatory blaze.

The incident, which happened at a house in Primrose Walk at around 5.30am on Sunday, July 4, saw the building begin to fill with smoke after plastic sheeting on the conservatory caught on fire.

Firefighters believe the blaze was started by discarded cigarettes and pointed out that the house’s smoke alarms almost certainly saved the occupants, two men and a woman, from inhaling toxic fumes given off by the burning plastic.

Yateley firefighter Danny Randall said: "We in the fire service can’t stress enough the importance of both regularly checking your home’s smoke detectors and making sure that you dispose of cigarettes, matches and other burning materials safely."

Crews were able to bring the blaze under control and no-one was hurt.
