Army training grounds hit by more heath fires

FIREFIGHTERS battled another two heath fires on army training ground on Tuesday.

The fires are the latest in a string of blazes that wildlife experts fear could devastate fragile habitats for rare animals and plants.

Firefighters from Rushmoor fire station in Farnborough were called out to tackle both fires on the Caesar's Camp training area at around 7pm on Tuesday.

The training area is a mixture of heath and woodland on land covering and area between Aldershot, Farnham and Farnborough.

More common

One fire engine and four firefighters were sent to each of the fires, which were close to Bourley Road, Aldershot.

Nightwatch firefighter Williams, who attended the scene, said heath fires were becoming more and more common due to the lack of rain.

"We cannot tell how they were both caused, but we do get called to many of them when the land has been dry like this," he said.

"We have to expect and prepare for these types of fires in this season."

The two crews spent around an hour putting out each of the fires.
