VIDEO - Airshow wows again with public displays

THE Red Arrows were just part of the awesome aerial displays at the Farnborough Airshow over the weekend.

Tens of thousands people visited on Saturday and Sunday to see the displays that also included the Airbus 380 and historic planes.

However, the value of the deals done at last week's trade days was down on the 2008 show.

That year, Farnborough International, which runs the event, said deals worth £57.36bn were signed compared with £31bn this year.

Click play on the video screen below for a round-up of airshow events and footage of displays.

Agree with PJT that the displays were somewhat tame, but what really annoyed me was the poor facilities again this year. Huge crowds resulted in outrageous queues at the poorly maintained loos and the 2 tiny public bars!

Even with the excellent free, traffic busting bus service from Aldershot, the £25 entrance fee simply cannot be justified.

It is complete 'air show' hype to talk aboult deals done at the airshow. These buying decisions are made well outside of any airshow. It may be nice to announce them there just to justify the eco unfriendly occasion.

The flying displays are ALWAYS entertaining but this year was tame compared with previous years. In past years there has been an awesome line up with Sukhoi, Mig, Saab, Mirage to mention but a few. Where were the Russians with their breath-taking displays? (remember when the Backfire bomber came to Farnborough?) On the Sunday the Vulcan could not fly... noooooooo!!!! I just can't get enough of this graceful beauty. The Blades were spectacular as were the Red Arrows (aren't they always), and Spitfires are always nice to see (and hear).

To sum up, an entertaining and enjoyable flying display but not a breathtaking display... certainly not enough to "wow" me. This year we chose not to go in to the main display but watched from a nearby vantage point (the first time we have done this). I'm glad we didn't pay out £30 a head at the gate to go in - I'd have felt just a little bit dissapointed. We have to remember that this is first and foremost a trade show.
