Former Aldershot mayor, Vee Nevett, dies aged 96
By Pete CastleJuly 28, 2010
A FORMER mayor of Aldershot, who ran a charity for older people for more than 40 years, has died after a short illness.
Vee Nevett, who was the town's mayor in 1972-73, passed away last week at Frimley Park Hospital. She was 96.
She was the founder and first chairman of the Aldershot Townswomen’s Guild, a group that still meets monthly to this day, and was involved in the Conservative Club.
Mrs Nevett stood for election and was voted onto the then Aldershot Borough Council in 1964.
She remained a councillor until 1975, and served in a number of senior positions, including as head of housing in an era when most social housing was built and maintained by the council.
She was elected from among councillors as Mayor of Aldershot in 1972-73, and followed it up with a year as deputy mayor in 1973-74.
However, her most lasting legacy was in helping to set up and run an older people’s club and support group, the Aldershot Elders Club.
She stayed involved with the organisation from 1958 until six years ago, when she was 90-years-old.
The club still meets twice a week, and is now run by Age Concern in Pool Road, Aldershot, providing a good lunch and social activities to older people who might otherwise not be able to leave home.
