Aldershot Lido's busiest start to season for years
By Pete CastleJuly 28, 2010
ALDERSHOT Lido has reported its busiest opening few weeks of the summer for some time.
The historic outdoor pool, opened in 1930, has lost money in recent years as poor summer weather put off the punters.
However, this year’s heatwave in June and July meant there were around 10,000 visits to the lido before the holidays even began – and council bosses are hoping that its popularity continues with the schools now out for six weeks.
The pool, water slides and other facilities will be open daily until Monday, September 5, between 10am and 6pm.
Owned by Rushmoor Borough Council and run by DC Leisure, the Aldershot facility is one of the largest open-air pools in the country.
Attractions on offer include three water slides, a diving board, paddling pool, sandpit and picnic area as well as basketball and football areas.
The pool was even used as a venue for the last London Olympics in 1948, hosting the swimming element of the modern pentathlon event.
Entry costs £5.80 for adults and £3.50 for children and senior citizens, with discounts for groups and families.
Councillor Diane Bedford, the council’s cabinet member for leisure and youth, said: "We sometimes forget how lucky we are to have such a valuable and popular attraction on our doorstep.
"This is a good, value-for-money family day out in the heart of Aldershot."
