Sports stars come to Yateley
By Tim TonkinJuly 29, 2010
GUEST appearances from sports stars and a Wii fit challenge were among the highlights of a Sports Personality event at Yateley School.
The event, which was held during the last week of term, saw the school’s sports hall transformed into a TV studio as pupils geared up to host the first ever Sports Personality of the Year awards.
More than 300 staff, parents and students attended the black tie event, which was held to honour the sporting achievements of pupils at the school.
The event, which was sponsored by Waitrose, saw appearances from former Southampton and Birmingham City footballer, Mark Dennis and the 2008 Olympic gymnast Becky Wing.
There was an amusing take on the James Corden England team talk skit, by year eight pupil Jack Prendiville, aimed at the Year 11 boys football team, and there was a solo gymnastics display and a dance performance.
The event was rounded off with a video message from the presenters of Sky’s Soccer AM, and a Nintendo Wii fit challenge in which Yateley headteacher Mark Jackman went head-to-head with PE teacher Sam Vaughan.
A total of 14 awards were presented, with 16-year-old Jonny Moore winning Sports Person-ality of the Year and GCSE PE student of the year.
The Year 9 football team was awarded team of the year, with individuals winning achievement and progress awards.
A spokesman for the school’s PE department said: “I am very proud of all the students who were nominated.
“We have so many talented sports performers at Yateley and it was a pleasure to celebrate their success through this event.”
