Acts lined up for Picnic to Music in the Park

March 22, 2011

ABBA and Queen tribute bands and a jazz musician with 14 top 40 hits to his name are among the acts playing at Farnborough’s biggest music event in the summer.

Picnic to Music in the Park will take place on the weekend of July 9-10 in the King George V Playing Fields, with every penny raised going to help the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham.

In common with successful events from years past, the two-night event will feature some high-tempo tribute acts to belt out some familiar favourites on the Saturday night, with a classier, more sedate atmosphere on the Sunday night, with some grown-up music to match.

Playing on the Saturday will be Platinum, who recently changed their name from Platinum Abba, will belt out the hits of everyone’s favourite Scandinavian pop quartet.

They will be joined by Killer Queen, a fine tribute group playing the best hits from the pen of Freddie Mercury and his band.

On Sunday, Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen, who had hits in the 60s and 70s, including a number two in the US chart, will play.

Playing alongside the Jazzmen on the bill will be Jacqui Dankworth, the daughter of jazz legends Johnny Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine, and now a top-rated jazz musician in her own right.

The event, organised by the Rotary Club of Farnborough, has taken place every two years since 2001 and raised £250,000 for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in that time.

On both nights, the gates open at 5pm and the show begins at 7.30pm. Both evenings are planned to end with a fireworks finale.

Tickets bought before May 30 are £17, £20 if bought after that but before the event, and £30 if bought on the day.

Tickets for children and OAPs are £12 if bought early, £15 if bought later but still in advance or £30 on the day.

Local sponsors of the event include TAG, owners of Farnborough Airport, BAE Systems, Central Heating Services and Rushmoor Borough Council.

Tickets went on sale on March 14 and are available from the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice’s website, Phyllis Tuckwell charity shops in Farnborough, Aldershot, Fleet, Camberley and Farnham, Farnborough Leisure Centre, Princes Hall in Aldershot and Rushmoor Borough Council offices in Farnborough.

Tickets can also be bought from the Phyllis Tuckwell website.
