Lack of interest puts paid to Midnight March

A CHARITY walk around Aldershot that was due to take place next month has been cancelled.
Organisers of the SSAFA Midnight March around Aldershot on September 2 have called the event off due to a lack of interest from participants.
Michael Ivatt, from SSAFA Forces Help, said the charity was 'really sorry' to disappoint those who had hoped to take part in the 12.5km night-time walk.
The charity, which helps soldiers, sailors, airmen and their families, held a successful event last year around the garrison to mark their 125th anniversary during October, but this year's event has been cancelled.
"SSAFA Forces Help prides itself on ensuring that all our events are very well run, great fun to participate in and, most importantly, contribute financially to the work of the charity," Mr Ivatt said.
"Last year, the 2010 Midnight March was very successful and generated valuable funds for our vital work.
"Unfortunately, this year, fewer people are able to participate in the march. As a result, a real risk exists that the event would cost the charity more to run than the funds and income it would generate.
"We know that this decision will be a disappointment for all those people who have already signed up to participate.
"We are particularly grateful to them and also to everyone else who has helped and supported the event. We hope that everyone will understand why we have had to make this difficult decision."
Organisers are hoping to reschedule the Midnight March for the early part of next year, he added.
