Record GCSE success as pupils pick up results

PUPILS and teachers across north Hampshire are celebrating some of the best ever GCSE results.

Youngsters may have had to brave the early morning rain to get their results on Thursday, but for some it will take a lot more than weather to put a dampener on the rest of their day.

A total of 68% of grades awarded to pupils at Cove School in Farnborough were between an A* and a C.

Headteacher Megan Davies Jones praised students and staff for their efforts.

'Exceptionally hard work'

She said: "Staff and students worked exceptionally hard and the increased percentage of A* grades this year has been especially rewarding."

Salesian College, the private all-boys school, 99% of students earned at least five A*-C grades and 63% of them eared at least seven A*-A grades.

Patrick Wilson, headteacher, said: "At a time when the performance of boys at GCSE is a national concern, for our young men to achieve both individually and as a cohort such stunning and prestigious GCSE results is a cause of great celebration and personal satisfaction, for them, their families and the college."

At the all-girl Farnborough Hill, 90% of all the grades were A*-B.

Headteacher Sarah Buckle said: "We are over the moon with these outstanding results. All the girls have done extremely well and been justly rewarded for all their hard work."

Students at Yateley School were credited for achieving 'remarkable success' in their GCSE results this year, marking the third rise in as many years in terms of overall achievement.

The school saw 83% of students secure five or more passes at grades A* to C, including English and Mathematics, compared to 78% who did so last year. Not only did significantly more students pass the  five A*-C threshold, they did so with many more A*, A and B grades.

'Dedication'

Mark Jackman, Yateley School headteacher, said "I am delighted that we have continued to deliver the very best for our students. They deserve credit for the dedication that led to this success, as do their teachers.

"We have worked hard to develop an ethos in this school in which everyone aims to do their very best and the results show that we are achieving this."

Among the general atmosphere of success students Matthew Beech and Brittany Roberts can be singled out for special praise with both achieving a clean sweep of A* in all their exams, with 31 other students achieving 8 or more A* or A grades.

This improvement in results was mirrored in last week’s A level success, where 55% of all grades were A*, A or B.

Pupils at Ash Manor School were also celebrating with all round improvements on last year's results.

The school saw 57% of students achieve five or more A* to C passes including in English and Mathematics compared to the figure of 50.5% that did so last year. The number of A* to C passes in at least five subjects not including English or Mathematics also rose to 73% compared to the 71% in 2010.

David Garrido, the school's headteacher, said that the results showed that a lot of hard work had gone into exam work before and throughout the summer adding that everyone at the school was delighted with the success.
