Police hunt carjacker who attacked helpful driver

AN ALDERSHOT pensioner was viciously attacked and carjacked after picking up a walker who said he was hurt.

But instead of thanks, the good samaritan had his car stolen and was left in a country lane needing hospital treatment for punches and kicks from the man he thought he was helping. Police are now searching for the attacker, who they believe may also have been responsible for an assault on a teenage girl.

The 73-year-old man was left with serious bruising after being punched and kicked by another man while out at Odiham Wharf on Friday (August 26).

The attack happened at around 4.30pm after the 73-year-old offered a lift to the man, who claimed to have sprained his ankle, in his blue Peugeot 206

The elderly driver was directed to a country lane where he was then attacked dragged from his car, and further assaulted before his attacker got in the vehicle and drove off.

Police are also investigating a second incident in Basingstoke in which a 19-year-old woman was assaulted by a man matching the same description as the attacker in the first incident.

The suspect in both cases is described as white and wearing a black hooded top or waterproof, possibly a Nike brand. The car being sought by the police is a three-door blue Peugeot 206 with registration LV56 FCA.

Detective Inspector Tim Ireson, leading the investigation, said: “From the descriptions given, the incidents may be linked but we are keeping an open mind at the moment and working to establish whether the same man is linked to both.

“Clearly this is a very nasty individual who subjected a pensioner to a vicious attack before stealing his car and who then may also have assaulted a 19-year-old woman."

Members of the public are being urged not to approach anyone they suspect could be the attacker. Anyone with information is asked to call Basingstoke CID on 101, or 0845 0454545 outside Hampshire, or information can be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
