Police investigating armed robbery at scrapyard

A SCRAP metal merchant in Aldershot was hit by armed robbers on Friday morning.

A masked man pointed a shotgun at staff at the scrap yard in Hollybush Lane, Aldershot, before making off with thousands of pounds in cash.

Police said a man wearing a balaclava approached the service desk at the Deane Wood scrap metal dealer at Stubbs Industrial Estate just before midday.

He threatened the cashier and grabbed a cash box before fleeing in a blue Vauxhall Vectra which was waiting outside.

The car was later found on fire in a wooded area of Lock Road, close to Mons Barracks in the Aldershot garrison.

Police believe the robber and getaway driver then made off in another vehicle but do not know what make or colour it was.

Detective Sergeant Rob Brocklehurst said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who noticed the Vauxhall Vectra particularly in the area of Hollybush Lane or Lock Road.

"The canal tow path running from Ash Lock to Lock Road is very popular with runners, walkers and fishermen and we would appeal to anyone in this area who saw anything suspicious to contact us."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Aldershot CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Minicom users should call 01962 875000.
