Shots start cheerleader search
By Tim HarrisDecember 05, 2011
ALDERSHOT Town Football Club is hoping to set up a cheerleading squad to perform at home games from 2012.
The club is working with the Albany Dance Academy, which meets at Connaught Leisure Centre, to find a troupe that can perform before games and at half-time. The dancers will perform routines featuring a mix of traditional cheerleading and street dance movements.
Richard Petty, associate director at Aldershot Town, said: “I am delighted that the dance academy has shown such a strong interest in getting involved. This is an opportunity for us to forge closer links with the community and to give young people a chance to showcase their talent.
“This is also an opportunity for the club to add a little more to the match day experience, to try and give supporters added value at the EBB Stadium.”
The academy has run classes at the centre since 1996 and members’ choreography has featured on children’s TV and at prestigious venues such as Sadler’s Wells, the Palladium and Royal Albert Hall.
Hopes are high that a new relationship with Aldershot Town FC could alter the audience Albany Dance Academy has catered for in the past.
“Previously, our performance has mainly been for children,” said Emma Weir, the academy’s principal. “This squad is for adults aged 16 and up, so we are looking forward to creating something a bit different at the Shots.”
