TRIBUTES have been paid to a fanatical Aldershot Town fan who died after being hit by a train.

Steve "Chappie" Chapman was killed on the railway line close to Winchfield railway station on December 27.

Aldershot Town Football Club said it was "deeply saddened" to learn of the death of the 33-year-old staunch supporter.

"Steve was an extremely popular and dedicated supporter of the club and an integral part of so many positive fan initiatives," said the club.

"He was a major figurehead of the excellent RBA (Red and Blue Army) supporters' group who have travelled the length and breadth of the country over the years providing fantastic support to the players and club, win, lose or draw.

"Steve was also a well respected and pivotal supporter in the East Bank regularly starting the terrific vocal support that emanates from the famous terrace.

"In addition to his loyalty and devotion to Aldershot Town FC, Steve also possessed a care within his community and, alongside fellow Shots fans, he embarked on the RBA’s sponsored drive to all 92 Football League grounds in 2007 raising funds for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice."

Only recently, Mr Chapman travelled to Rotherham United for the wedding of fellow Shots fan Barry Wattam before watching the afternoon match at the Don Valley Stadium.

The wedding group had a photograph taken with Shots manager Dean Holdsworth before kick-off.

Mr Chapman also proposed to his fiancée Jackie at a pre-season friendly match at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

The club said Jackie was at the New Year’s Eve match against Plymouth Argyle along with their three-year-old son Danny and his stepdaughter Sophie.

A minute's applause was held before the match in memory of Mr Chapman.

A British Transport Police spokesman said the death was being treated as non-suspicious.
