Police warning after night-time robberies

By Stephanie Cockroft
January 19, 2012

A SPATE of street robberies in Aldershot and Farnborough has led to police urging people to stay on their guard.

Police say three of the 14 incidents in the past three months have involved weapons, leaving the victims frightened and vulnerable.

In one attack, the victim sustained head injuries and woke up next to a pool of blood.

The robberies, which have all taken place at night, have involved the offender being dressed in dark clothing, leaving the victim unable to catch a glimpse of their attacker.

Police say the reason behind the sudden surge in statistics is unknown. They are now urging residents to be extra vigilant, particularly at night.

See this week's Aldershot and Farnborough News & Mails for the full story.

aldershot police are totally inept and unsympathetic to victims of violent crime in my experience.

GEOGRAPHICAL CRIME PROFILING - www.police.uk & www.crimereports.co.uk both serve as useful tools to analyse crime.

The first website (police.uk) is more detailed but unfortunately not current enough to be as effective as it could be (last updated Nov 11). You obviously want to see the period over Christmas for example re: burglary offenses.

Not a 'cheap' criticism; it just needs to be monitored and maintained more regularly. The website is a fantastic tool for the communities (and criminologists). Well thought out.

Hampshire Constabulary do a great job with their networking sites (Facebook & twitter) - CCTV images of offenders, reports on recent crimes, appeals to the public etc.

Well worth a look if you've got the time to spend.

Aldershot11. Thanks very much for your comment, I was, at first, as I'm sure you intended, insulted, but now I realise that you must be about as stupid as your comment. Heroism is not punching the lights out of a drug addict knicking your wallet. I suppose you think that everyone that either doesn't want to fight or is unable to fight is a coward. I've learnt that life's too short to try to hang on to a few measly quid in return for several hefty blows from an Iron bar and waking up in hospital with 35 stitches in a head wound. The police told me categorically that more people die in defiance than those that yield. But, I'm sure that you are as tough as your comments are ignorant, so go ahead and defend yourself mate.

What are the police doing about this? They seem unable to catch criminals, but woe betide you if your law abiding and you inadvertently break the law.

I remember being attacked walking in Aldershot in 2009, the police never caught the assailant.

The police haven't got a clue.

Si G, Farnborough, A little common sense would tell us to not carry too much stuff an give it up under threat. Coward it's people like you with an attitude like that, that makes it easy for people to attack and rob innocent people, attitude like that you might aswell leave your front door open, leave your keys in your car and what you earn, give it charity

Doorman ,I once pursued an attacker, he drew a knife, and I only got away with it because I can run like hell when crying for mummy. I also heard of someone that defended himself in similar circumstances and beat the bloke to within a inch of his life only to find out the assailant was 14 and he ended up getting a 2 year sentence for his act of 'self defence'. A little common sense would tell us to not carry too much stuff an give it up under threat. I now carry a 'fake' wallet, containing a couple of used gift cards, 5 Euros , one of those fake twenty pound notes they use to advertise cashback and a couple of dollar bills. Also my old Nokia 3310, which is worth about £1.

hmmm spate of robberies, sounds like the hard up theives of the UK have noticed that any time a robery does seem to opop up in the news arounf here, noone is ever caught, and if someone is held it is usually the wrong person anyway. Basically the police in Rushmoor are completely inept and are only working the beat to gain experience so they can get into the MET, how anyone could rob that Santander bank at only 10pmish at night and not be found is beyond me. Way too much procedure, way too much time wasting because of procedure, and too much braun and not enough brain. If there was a clear police prescence in Rushmooor theives wouild not haver the guts to wander about robbing people as they please.

I think it’s allowed to carefully swipe your attacker with half a page of the Guardian newspaper......not the whole paper as this may harm them.

aldershot11, What the polite really mean is be on your guard and be prepared to give the attacker(s) anything they want. Do not attempt to defend yourself or we will arrest you.

hampshire man, what peaceful society when someone is going round attacking people for know reason, whats peaceful about that?? and i never mentioned family and the community getting involved, i was on about the indvidual being attacked, it's called self defence but sometimes the law doesn't see it like that but they are asking people (the public) to be on gaurd so what is the induvidal soposed to do, get beaten up??? get real

People have always had the right to defend themselves, but there is a difference from protecting yourself, your family and the community then going after the person with a baseball bat afterwards - I'm sure most reasonable people would agree that is the right and proper thing in a peaceful society?

Does this mean that in defending yourself from being attacked, the public are intitled to defend themselfs and as a result won't be held responsible if any harm is caused to the perpertrator, as the police are urging people to be on their gaurd
