Pegasus pub to host under-18s club night
By Stephen LloydJanuary 24, 2012
A FORMER nightclub boss has revealed plans to stage a weekly under-18s disco for youngsters across the StarCourier area.
Joe Borg has just secured permission to hold the regular Friday and Saturday night events in the former Pegasus pub in Aldershot High Street.
“Drugs and alcohol will not be tolerated, only soft drinks will be available,” said Mr Borg.
“I want to let the young people experience a nightclub without the need for alcohol to show they can have a great time without drinking.
“There will be a no smoking policy and cigarettes will not be sold at the venue.
“Anyone trying to get in who is over 18 will be banned.
“We have drawn up a list of club rules that shows we are not going to tolerate anything like bullying.
“The first disco is on February 3 and they will be every Friday and Saturday from 8pm to midnight.”
No alcohol will be stored on the premises when it is open to people under 18, although alcohol will be sold when it is hired out for special functions.
Mr Borg, who lives in Farnham, ran the former Warehouse nightclub in Fleet from 1994 until he sold it in 2000.
“I first thought of an under-18s disco in about 1995 or 1996 and just kept it a secret ever since,” he said.
“I sat down for a long time and thought about the house rules and regulations. I sent them to the police and they didn't have a problem with them.”
Mr Borg said that all staff were CRB-checked and he will have SIA-licensed door supervisors.
"We're looking to attract young people from Aldershot, Farnborough, Fleet, Ash and Farnham. If they want to come from further afield, from places like Guildford, then they can."
Mr Borg said he started organising discos for youngsters on a Monday when he ran the Warehouse.
“They were very popular until the initial novelty wore off,” he added. “I spoke to some of the parents about it and they said the children have got school during the week so it was difficult for them to attend.
"That’s why we’re holding the new discos on a Friday and Saturday night.
“At the moment all the youngsters are hanging around places like Manor Park because they’ve got nothing to do.
“This will help get them off the streets. We’re on Facebook so anyone can ask us questions and they'll get answered.”
