ELECTION: Power shifts away from Tories in Hart

By Tim Tonkin
May 04, 2012

THE Conservatives lost three seats on Hart District Council as the authority was left under no overall control following the local elections.

Community Campaign Hart won two of the those seats in the council chamber and, although the Tories remain the largest single party, there is now a hypothetical scenario of the Liberal Democrats - who held all their seats - potentially teaming up with CCH to grab power.

The make-up of the council has now changed to 16 Conservatives, 10 Lib Dems, seven CCH members and two independent councillors.

CCH candidates ousted the Tories in Fleet Courtmoor and Crondall wards. The group's leader, James Radley, said the two new councillors - John Bennison and Tony Clarke respectively - would be "very welcome and effective additions" to his team.

Councillor Radley comfortably retained his own Church Crookham East seat, and he added that he felt his party's gains were a clear indication of voter dissatisfaction with over-development in the area.

Fleet West saw the heaviest defeat of the night, as independent candidate Alan Oliver trounced the incumbent Conservative, Tim Davies.

Councillor Oliver said his result was remarkable in a ward that had previously never not returned a Tory candidate.

Former councillor and now independent candidate, Denis Gotel, made a strong showing in Fleet Central ward but lost out to Akmal Gani for the Conservatives.
