Plea for more volunteers at charity clubs
By Stephen LloydAugust 07, 2012
THREE popular clubs for older people in Fleet and Farnborough face the threat of closure unless more local people come forward urgently to help out.
Care charity Brendoncare has issued a plea for volunteer helpers so that it can continue providing members with their much-loved clubs which give them fun, friendship, activity and entertainment.
Brendoncare locality manager John Murphy said: “These clubs provide their members, most of whom are in their 80s and 90s and live alone, with really valuable trips out of their home. For many it is the only chance they get to go out.
“They enjoy meeting their friends, guest speakers and entertainers, activities, outings and informative talks.
“But we really need to recruit more helpers to keep the clubs going.
“Volunteers are very special people, so I hope the local community will respond to this heart-felt plea for help.”
Brendoncare’s Fleet Friday Friends need two more general volunteers.
The club meets at the British Red Cross Centre in Clarence Road, Fleet every Friday from 2pm to 4pm.
The Fleet and Crookham Welcome Club also needs more general helpers to get involved with all sorts of tasks.
It meets at the same venue every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm.
Meanwhile, the Farnborough Welcome Club needs a volunteer to help with preparing the room and putting away tables, as well as helping out at the club generally, so this is a role for someone who is physically fit.
The club meets at Blunden Hall in Blunden Road every Thursday from 2pm to 4pm.
Mr Murphy said: “Our clubs are really popular, showing the enormous need there is for socialising and friendship for older people.
“All Brendoncare volunteers are supported by professional staff, full training is given, and it really is a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable way to spend a few hours each week or fortnight.
“If you feel you could help us, please get in touch.”
Anyone who thinks they can help as a volunteer can call Brendoncare on 01962 877772 or 07548760897 or visit www.brendoncare.org.uk.
New members are also very welcome at any of the clubs.
