Nepalese men injured after car is ambushed

By Amy Taylor
January 25, 2013

THREE Nepalese men were injured when their car was attacked in Holly Road, Aldershot.

The group of men, aged 19, 20 and 21, were in a car on their way to a party around midnight on January 19 when another group of Nepalese men and boys turned on them.

The attackers hit the car with weapons and assaulted the three occupants, who escaped with minor injuries.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the attack, hoping someone may have information about what happened.

PC Iain Howard said: "I would like to hear from anyone who was in the Holly Road area at the time and may have seen a large group of people or the incident itself."

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Howard at Aldershot Police Station on 101 or Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Jennifer, Thank you for your helpful response. This only thing I would query is the term 'fight', I believe the original term 'attack' conveys a more accurate description of the incident.

I believe there is a more than even chance of the attack being caste, clan or even 'home village' affilliation based; a form of discrimination that can be just as insidious as racial discrimination.

@ Jennifer, Thanks for the clarification hopefully those that read any items regarding the nepalese living in the borough in future will interpret them for just what they are, and not as a reinforcement of their own misguided preconceptions.

Thank you for all your comments. The reason for using "Nepalese" in the headline is search engine optimisation - a technique employed by most news websites. It ensures that people who are searching for a story - say they witnessed or heard about the fight and wanted to see if it had been covered - can find it in the most effective way.

When people want to find information, they use a search engine because it is the fastest and easiest way to get it. The likelihood is they would include "Nepalese" in the search and including it in the headline means they are more likely to find our story.

We also assist the police in their investigations and witness appeals and officers wanted the public to know that the fight involved a group of Nepalese.

Nobody's disputing the facts, and nobody's being PC. I was disputing what the title implies rather than that the article shouldn't mention the fact that the men in question were Nepalese.

The facts are a gang of Nepelse men attacked some other Nepelese men. Sorry if the truth hurts, but hey everything is not rosy in PC UK.

Well unless you expect them to be working after 9pm on a Friday night (as in when the comment by sleeping beauty was submitted) or on Saturday morning then they haven't really had a chance. :)

Underwhelmed by absence of response from News and Mail staff about previous comments on this article.

I guess that they are too busy on the next story to read the comments thread of "yesterday's news".

Many previous comments about sloppy reporting, irrelevant or misleading headlines, abysmal grammar, use of slang in the articles and spelling (unfortunately for us the comment box does not support spellcheck) all went without response from the editorial team at News and Mail.

I understand the relevance of such info being in the article itself, it is an interesting aspect to an otherwise limited story, but I was questioning the motives of the paper using the word "Nepalese" in the title because it implies there's a racial element to the attack, when there clearly isn't.

This is an especially questionable decision on a site where a considerable portion of the commenters seem to like nothing better than demonising our ex-Gurkha neighbours.

BB SN SB Its a man bites dog story so nepalese men being attacked by other nepalise men is certainly relevant. At least we know from which section of the population these men are from and wont be looking out for white caucasians to accuse and be calling this a racist crime.

It also insures that people read it which is why they do it. Unfortunately in this day and age where people expect to get all the info they need from the 30 second headline and then assume the rest of the story all it does is fuel the tensions. It would be interesting for the aldershot news to adopt a "is it relevant" approach to a story, so in the case above where it is clearly not a racially motivated attack the word Nepalese is not used and the story becomes 3 young men on there way to a party were attacked by anoth group of young men.

So editors of the news are you going to take up the "is it relevant" challenge and get back to reporting the facts and stop fanning the flames of tensions.

That, BB my friend, is how the press operates. People continue to be racially profiled across all walks of life, which makes people think it's OK to do this on an interpersonal level.

Interesting that the article chooses to name the men as "Nepalese" in the headline, when there isn't any racial or ethnic motive to this crime.
