Aldershot’s Amelle is the new Sugababe

29/12/2005

AN Aldershot singer achieved overnight pop stardom after she became the newest member of girl group the Sugababes.

It was a dream come true for Amelle Berrabah, 21, when news broke last Thursday that she was to replace Sugababe Mutaya Buena.

Amelle’s parents moved to Aldershot from Morocco and Amelle and her two sisters and brother have lived in Aldershot all their lives.

But last week they went to London to spend Christmas Day with Amelle to celebrate the good news.

Amelle’s sister Zakiya, 31, told the News: “We’re over the moon.

“We’ve known for quite a while but you don’t believe it until you see it in the papers.”

Musical talent must run in the family as Amelle and her youngest sister Samiya, 19, were part of a singing duo named Boo2 which toured the UK and America.

The two sisters met the Sugababes’ boss in America and Amelle received a call from Island Records two weeks ago to ask her to join the pop group. Sugarbabe Buena had a baby earlier this year and did not settle back into the trio.

Samiya said: “It’s really exciting and I’m really proud of her and very happy. This sort of stuff doesn’t happen every day to people.

“It has just come out of the blue completely.

“When she got the call I was sat with her and the manager just called up and said come down to London, there will be a car with you in two seconds.

“Amelle is so, so ecstatically happy.

“She can’t wait to get in there and do her thing.

“What they’ve got planned for her is unbelievable. It’s a dream come true for her, it’s just amazing.

“We’ve always loved the Sugababes.

“I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like them. They have been around for years — they make great music and are just a great band.”

Amelle’s mum and four siblings were whisked up to London on Christmas Eve and were treated to a VIP Christmas.

Samiya said: “It was the most top Christmas I have ever had because everything was prepared for us and we didn’t have to lift a finger.”

Amelle hopes to come back to Aldershot in the new year.

The News interviewed Amelle two years ago after the she had won the final of Top of the Pops magazine’s Star Search 2003. Then she won the chance to be a lead vocalist in a pop group with members from the UK and America.
